Family Mentors
The HTS Family Mentor programme was first introduced in 1999. The idea of the programme was to embrace our new families and to ease them into life at HTS. At first we were only able to have new families matched with mentor volunteers for entry grades, meaning grades 1,4,7 and 9. The Family Mentor Programme has successfully grown since 1999 and in this past year, we have been able to match every new family with a mentor.
When we place a new family with a mentor volunteer, we work closely with the Admission Department. We match the particular school (primary, junior, middle or senior) of the new student with the same school and grade (if possible) that the mentor volunteer’s child was recently in.
Our group of mentor volunteers have been outstanding in calming fears, answering questions and being a friendly voice. Some of those unusual phrases like “sharing days” and “grade parents” can raise an eyebrow or two when you don’t know what they are. A quick call to your mentor can alleviate those sudden panic attacks!
We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved with this very worthwhile programme. HTS is proud of its school community and family environment, and we hope that all of our new families feel welcomed.
If anyone would like to share the mentor volunteer experience and volunteer for this programme, please contactCarole Palmer (Co-ordinator) at stroz5@rogers.com or Pamela Merkel(VP Volunteers) at pamela.merkel@sympatico.ca .
