Information Technology Student Use Policy
HTS has assembled a computer network that is intended to assist students in their academic work. As computers are increasingly being relied upon in virtually all aspects of the school’s life, it is important that everyone uses the network responsibly. The privilege of using it is granted only to those students who agree to work according to the school’s expectations.
- Students should not to be in classrooms or resource areas that are outfitted with computers without faculty supervision. Primary and Junior students in their homerooms are exempted from this expectation in the morning prior to chapel.
- Students only have permission to use the computer system if they log in with the login name provided for them by the school and with their chosen password. No student may, under any circumstances, avoid system security or log in as someone else.
- Students are not to engage in any sort of activity that could in any way interfere with the functioning of network either by altering software or damaging hardware.
- Students are to use the machines as the school has configured them. Neither the desktop nor the operating system may be altered in any way.
- Students are not permitted to use pop-up messaging.
- Games are never to be played on the system by students.
- Students are entitled to use only their own H.T.S. Internet e-mail accounts.
- The content of e-mail must be in keeping with the school’s expectations for decorum.
- Be aware that e-mail or any files on the H.T.S. server are the property of the school, which has the legal right to view them if it deems it necessary. Deleted e-mail, documents and pictures may in fact be recoverable from back-ups.
- While it is highly appropriate for students to utilize notebook computers here, they may only connect to the network with a wireless access card. Students may not under any circumstances ever connect directly to the network with an ethernet connection and cable.
- Students do not have permission to download from the Internet without permission of a faculty member.
- Students are meant to have permission to use printers with the exception of the non-network printer in the Senior Library. This is intended to keep wasteful printing to a minimum.
- It is an illegal activity constituting theft of school property to copy software from the system.
- Students may not create shared folders on the system without permission of a faculty member.
Failure to live up to these expectations could bring about a suspension of computer privileges.
