Lower School Arts Programs
Imagination, creative freedom and artistic skills are nurtured from the earliest years at HTS. The Lower School arts programs, taught by accomplished music and visual arts specialists, cultivate an appreciation for the arts and the rich impact they have on our lives. Students are exposed to various forms of artistic expression and begin to develop a fluency with both visual and musical language. Through drawing, painting, sculpture, colour theory and a range of mulit-media and cross-curricular projects, they learn to communicate their ideas in dynamic and challenging ways. The school’s music program, developed specifically for younger students, focuses on choral-based learning to develop music literacy. Children learn to sing, move, listen to and play music of different genres, from a variety of cultures.
Showcasing artistic accomplishments is an important facet of the arts programs, building confidence and self-esteem. Lower School musicians perform on Grandparents Day, at the Mother’s Day Tea and the HTS Christmas Concert. They also participate at community events as well as at the CIS Music Festival. Student artwork is prominently displayed throughout the school year, culminating in the annual HTS art show each spring.
