Course Selections for 2010-2011

December 7, 2009

Dear Parent and Students,

The purpose of this letter is to inform parents and students about the course selection process for the 2010 - 2011 school year.

Here is the course selection process for students currently in grades 8 through 11:

1. Students need to have completed selecting their courses in Career Cruising and have the printed form signed by parents/guardians and approved by the appropriate Guidance personnel. Please return this form to Mrs. Deneweth at reception by Friday, January 22, 2010.

2. The data from the massed choices of all students will be used to set the Master Schedule in a lengthy process that involves the allocation of teachers and resources, and the determining the combinations of classes that appear in each timetable block or period. This process is completed in mid-February.

3. Once the blocking is completed, student schedules will be generated. Students with incomplete schedules will be contacted by the Guidance Department to reselect. Enrolment in some optional courses is limited, and the school reserves the right to cancel courses for which there is insufficient demand.

4. During the third term students finalized schedules for 2010-2011 will be distributed by the Guidance Department.

After the blocking is set in February, changes that students hope to make to their slate of courses can only be made within the parameters of the Master Schedule. Students who decide to make substantial programme changes at the end of the summer will likely face disappointment when they learn that the courses they desire are already full or the combination of courses they would like is not possible. It is impossible to change the school schedule in late August to accommodate such changes.

Before handing the completed form to Mrs. Deneweth students should:

• Make sure that they have selected the required compulsory subjects. They should check this with their guidance counselor.

• Refer to the HTS Course Calendar for course descriptions, prerequisites, and diploma requirements. All this information is available in Career Cruising but can also be downloaded from the HTS website.

Regards,

Desmond T. Burke
Deputy Head – Student Services
