This course is aimed at students who have graduated from Grade 8 who could
benefit from strengthening their skills in math before entering Senior School, or for those grade 8 graduates who are proficient in math and wish to accelerate. This course would also greatly benefit students who have completed Grade 9 who would like to re-take the course to
gain a better understanding of the material and improve their overall grade for
the year.

This course explores the local, national and global forces that have shaped Canada’s national identity from World War I to the present. Students will investigate the challenges presented by economic, social and technological changes and explore the contributions made by individuals and groups to Canadian culture and society during this period. Students will use critical-thinking and communication skills to evaluate various interpretations of the issues and events of the period and to present their own points of view.

This
course enables students to broaden their understanding of relationships and
extend their problem-solving and algebraic skills through investigation, the
effective use of technology, and abstract reasoning. Students will explore
quadratic relations and their applications; solve and apply linear systems;
verify properties of geometric figures using analytic geometry; and investigate
the trigonometry of right and acute triangles. Students will reason
mathematically and communicate their thinking as they solve multi-step
problems.

This course introduces the theories, questions and issues that are the major concerns of anthropology, psychology and sociology. Students will develop an understanding of the way social scientists approach the topics they study and the research methods they employ. Students will be given opportunities to explore theories from a variety of perspectives and to become familiar with current thinking on a range of issues that have captured the interest of classical and contemporary social scientists in the three disciplines.

This course enables students to deepen their understanding of chemistry
through the study of the properties of chemicals and chemical bonds; chemical
reactions and quantitative relationships in those reactions; solutions and
solubility; and atmospheric chemistry and the behaviour of gases. Students will
further develop their analytical skills and investigate the qualitative and
quantitative properties of matter, as well as the impact of some common
chemical reactions on society and the environment.

This course is designed to prepare you for university by providing an
in-depth exploration of a variety of compelling works of fiction and
non-fiction. The major sources focus upon significant historical events and
trace the growth and personal journeys of protagonists who are profoundly
changed by the events they endure. Following these characters and the ways they
respond to hardship and change, will provide endless opportunities to study the
form of the novel and each writer’s craft. As well, using essays, poetry, speeches, and art, we will spend time examining your own writing style, attempting to uncover the key areas you need to improve. Finally, the ISP will provide you with an excellent opportunity to hone your research, presentation, and essay writing skills as you explore popular literature from around the world.

New textbooks can be ordered through our summer course registration system. Please “check out/click” the appropriate textbook in the course registration section and it will be added to your fees. The book will be available at HTS on the first day of classes.

Used textbooks: Please contact the HTS Guild to see if your textbook is available. Please make sure that it is the correct edition.

Depending on the course, there could be additional course fees such as a field trip or a guest speaker.
Refunds
A $100 non-refundable deposit is required as part of the course registration fee to hold your space in each course. Refunds will not be given with less than 60 days notice before the course begins. Refunds will not be given due to poor attendance, or behaviour issues. If a student becomes ill and can not complete the course, a doctor's note will be required to recover up to 50% of the registration fee. All refund inquiries must be made to David Hughes, Summer Program Director.
Summer School Dress Code
HTSS student dress should have a neat and modest appearance, allowing for personal expression of style while maintaining respect for the school and the individual. All clothing must be clean and in good repair. The following items are unacceptable for wearing at HTS Summer Program:

No hats, or headgear

No midriff showing either when standing or sitting

No tube tops

No spaghetti straps (straps must be at least 3 to 5 cm wide straps)

T-shirts must not contain offensive pictures or language (depicting alcohol, drugs, tobacco, sexual content and other items considered offensive by the faculty)

Undergarments must not be visible

Spikes, chains, dog collars are not allowed

Pants must fit properly on the waist
-
Shorts/skirts must be of an acceptable length (no shorter than mid-thigh)

Shorts/skirts and other items of clothing may not be tight, clingy, mesh or see through

Tops cannot be low cut
Students in violation of these guidelines will be asked by faculty to change into appropriate clothing. If they cannot do so, they will be sent to the Director of Summer Programs and their parents will be contacted.
Attendance
We maintain strict registration and attendance procedures to help ensure the safety and security of all students and to properly track each child’s personal and medical information.
Attendance will be taken and tracked every day by the summer school teacher.

If you know in advance that your child will be absent from class, please inform the summer school teacher. If the phones are busy, your call will be sent to voice mail. Please leave a message.
Summer school attendance is compulsory to receive course credit.
Student Behaviour
Although we will work hard to encourage and promote positive and healthy student deportment, please note that if your child does not adhere to the HTS code of conduct expectations, it is our right to remove your child from the course without refund.
