Summer School

Catch Up, Brush Up, Move Up.

Our passionate and skilled HTS faculty will provide each student with a valuable learning experience.

These comprehensive courses will give each student a head start on their studies, will reduce workload during the regular school year, and improve academic standing for preparation for senior courses or University.

Choose from one of the following four courses, each of which qualifies for one full Ontario Secondary School academic credit.  

*Please note that HTS reserves the right to cancel any courses due to insufficient enrollment. We will provide as much notice as possible and provide a full refund if courses do not run. 

Chemistry (SCH3U)

Instructor: Tara Irani
Open to students in: Grade 11
Pre-requisite: Science, Grade 10 Academic
Textbook:  Chemistry 11 – McGraw Hill – 9780070915756
Cost: $1195 (including tax and including lunch)

This course enables students to deepen their understanding of chemistry through the study of the properties of chemicals and chemical bonds; chemical reactions and quantitative relationships in those reactions; solutions and solubility; and atmospheric chemistry and the behaviour of gases. Students will further develop their analytical skills and investigate the qualitative and quantitative properties of matter, as well as the impact of some common chemical reactions on society and the environment.

Introduction to Anthropology, Psychology and Sociology (HSP3M)

Pre-requisite: CGC1D – if a Grade 10 student has a 70% average

This course introduces the theories, questions and issues that are the major concerns of anthropology, psychology and sociology. Students will develop an understanding of the way social scientists approach the topics they study and the research methods they employ. Students will be given opportunities to explore theories from a variety of perspectives and to become familiar with current thinking on a range of issues that have captured the interest of classical and contemporary social scientists in the three disciplines.

Earth and Space Science (SES4U)

Open to students in: Grade 11, 12
Pre-requisite: Science, Grade 10 Academic

This course develops students' understanding of Earth and its place in the universe. Students will investigate the properties of and forces in the universe and solar system and analyze techniques scientists use to generate knowledge about them. Students will closely examine the materials of Earth, its internal and surficial processes, and its geological history, and will learn how Earth's systems interact and how they have changed over time. Throughout the course, students will learn how these forces, processes, and materials affect their daily lives. The course draws on biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics in its consideration of geological and astronomical processes that can be observed directly or inferred from other evidence.

Canadian History (CHC2D)

Instructor: Michael Storey

Open to students in: Grade 10

Pre-requisites: Geography of Canada, Grade 9 - CGC1D

This course explores the local, national and global forces that have shaped Canada’s national identity from World War I to the present.  Students will investigate the challenges presented by economic, social and technological changes and explore the contributions made by individuals and groups to Canadian culture and society during this period.  Students will use critical-thinking and communication skills to evaluate various interpretations of the issues and events of the period and to present their own points of view.

Faculty

All Summer Program camps and courses are led by experienced HTS teachers and coaches. These gifted educators take immense pride in encouraging, challenging and inspiring young people to discover and develop the best that is within them.

Textbooks

  • New textbooks can be ordered through our summer course registration system. Please “check out/click” the appropriate textbook in the course registration section and it will be added to your fees. The book will be available at HTS on the first day of classes.
  • Used textbooks: Please contact Wendy Fursey (wlfursey@gmail.com) or Angi Turner (angi.turner@rogers.com) to see if your textbook is available. Please make sure that it is the correct edition.
  • Depending on the course, there could be additional course fees such as a field trip or a guest speaker.

Summer School Dress Code

HTSS student dress should have a neat and modest appearance, allowing for personal expression of style while maintaining respect for the school and the individual. All clothing must be clean and in good repair. The following items are unacceptable for wearing at HTSS:

  • No hats, or headgear
  • No midriff showing either when standing or sitting
  • No tube tops
  • No spaghetti straps (straps must be at least 3 to 5 cm wide straps)
  • T-shirts must not contain offensive pictures or language (depicting alcohol, drugs, tobacco, sexual content and other items considered offensive by the faculty)
  • Undergarments must not be visible
  • Spikes, chains, dog collars are not allowed
  • Pants must fit properly on the waist and be worn with a belt
  • Shorts/skirts must be of an acceptable length (no shorter than mid-thigh)
  • Shorts/skirts and other items of clothing may not be tight, clingy, mesh or see through
  • Tops cannot be low cut

Students in violation of these guidelines will be asked by faculty to change into appropriate clothing. If they cannot do so, they will be sent to the Director of Summer Programs and their parents will be contacted.

 

Attendance
We maintain strict registration and attendance procedures to help ensure the safety and security of all students and to properly track each child’s personal and medical information.

Attendance will be taken and tracked every day by the summer school teacher.

Please telephone reception (905) 737-1114 or email the camp director (dhughes@hts.on.ca) if your child will be late or absent. If you know in advance that your child will be absent from class, please inform the summer school teacher. If the phones are busy, your call will be sent to voice mail. Please leave a message.

 

Summer school attendance is compulsory to receive course credit.

 

Student Behaviour
Although we will work hard to encourage and promote positive and healthy student deportment, please note that if your child does not adhere to the HTS code of conduct expectations, it is our right to remove your child from the course without refund.
