Sandra Herbst is a noted system leader, author, speaker, coach, consultant, and educator with extensive experience in leadership, adult learning, and assessment. Sandra has helped systems to reflect on current goals and to plan strategically for next steps, regardless of the focus of educational innovations.

Sandra’s expertise, informed by wide-ranging practice and research, is enhanced by her compassion and humour. She has worked in both elementary and secondary schools as a classroom and specialty teacher, school administrator, and program consultant. Sandra is the former superintendent of the second-largest school district in Manitoba and a past President of the Manitoba Association of School Superintendents and the Manitoba ASCD Affiliate.

As a facilitator of workshops, web conferences, and Institutes across North America and internationally, Sandra provides teachers and leaders with strategies and methods to help meet the diverse needs of learners. She engages in long-term projects with school systems including co-teaching and co-planning with teachers. Sandra models strategies through demonstration lessons with students in their classrooms. Through these events and interactions, Sandra has conveyed her vision, humour, and passion to thousands of teachers and has followed up with many of them to assess and learn from their experiences.

It took me the drive back to the city to wrap my head around the scope of what I gained from HTS last weekend. I've been fortunate to have had some great professional development experiences in my career. I want you to know that HTS's Assessment Summit was one of the most inspiring and productive I've had.

The ways you and your team, with Sandra's guidance, modelled the principles you learned and shared with us was impressive. I appreciated that you took the time to connect with all of us individually and that checked in with us throughout our learning process. Your plenaries were designed to respond to our questions and needs, and the breakout sessions allowed us to hear stories of collaborative learning and implementing new assessment practices in a number of disciplines across your school divisions. You also gave us opportunities to engage in some productive conversations with colleagues from other schools and to do some hands-on collaboration.

In both the Single Point Rubrics and Getting to Personalization Through Instruction and Assessment sessions, I heard stories of long and challenging iterative learning journeys by inspiring teachers who generously shared their work and included their students' voices. In both, I walked away with the presenters' clear summit view of some outcomes we, in our school, can achieve, but I also had a clear sense of first manageable steps. I loved that the sessions had strong foundational principles and included hands-on protocols that I can use in my classes and department right away.

What I heard was a story of school transformation from a truly inspiring learning community.
